This year, the McGaw YMCA celebrates a milestone year – our 125th Anniversary! Since 1885, we have served generations in Evanston and the surrounding area through numerous YMCA programs and activities. Strengthening spirit, mind, and body has always been and continues to be an essential part of our mission – so it’s fitting that our theme for this year’s events and activities is “125 Years Strong”.
As celebrate this milestone, we ask you to please make a gift to the McGaw YMCA. Your gift to our Annual Fund is critical, especially in this economy, in providing the fee assistance and programming the McGaw YMCA offers to the community. This past year we initiated our “STAY STRONG” initiative to help support those individuals and families severely impacted by the economy.
Over the last 8 months, nearly 70 families have been helped, fully or partially, with member or program fees – allowing them to continue to participate, find support, and help maintain a bit of normalcy during a very unstable time in their lives.
We will continue to make this commitment while the need exists – and your gift will help us to make that happen!

Our Mission
As a charitable, not-for-profit association, the McGaw YMCA’s mission is to promote growth in spirit, mind and body through programs and services for all in our diverse community. Our strength comes from the many members, donors and volunteers who share our vision and give generously of their time and talent.
McGaw YMCA Annual Fund
THANK YOU to all who have contributed to the Annual Fund in 2009 to support McGaw YMCA programming. Our wonderful generous donors, members, volunteers, and board made this accomplishment possible.
Last year, we provided over $1.45 million in membership support, program scholarships, and program subsidies to make our programs accessible to everyone, regardless of means.
Here’s what your gift can do:
- $1,000 provides a month of preschool care, giving parents peace of mind at work
- $500 gives a first-time camper one week at Camp Echo
- $300 provides two weeks of day camp, so a child isn’t home unsupervised
- $150 gives a man seven nights in our Residence facility
- $75 gives a child eight weeks of swimming lessons

Stock Gifts
A gift of stock (or other appreciated property) entitles you to a tax deduction for the market value of the donated stock (not just your cost basis). If the stock you wish to donate has been held for more than one year, you can avoid capital gains tax on any appreciation of the stock by donating the stock prior to sale. The McGaw YMCA benefits by selling the stock without paying taxes on the gain, and you benefit from making a contribution that would be larger than what you might have been able to donate in cash.
Please have your broker contact Romano Brothers & Co. (Caryn Okubo, at 847.866.7700) and inform them of your wish to transfer stock to the McGaw YMCA (Mesirow Financial, Inc. DTC # 727, directed to McGaw YMCA Gift Account # 11-417808). To ensure that you receive appropriate credit for your stock gift, please contact Brian M. Worrall with your information (including name, stock and number of shares).
Planned Giving
Planned gifts are an important means to build a strong financial foundation to support the mission and work of the McGaw YMCA. Your gift creates a lasting legacy and will touch lives through McGaw YMCA programs for generations to come. If you are naming the McGaw YMCA as a beneficiary of your estate, the legal name to use in your documents is "The Young Men’s Christian Association, McGaw, Inc.”
